“Letters to Margaret: The Life & Letters of James William Welch”
I was hired to design the Welch family’s ancestor’s Civil War era correspondence into a hardcover book and family heirloom. I assembled a team — cartographer, proofreaders, transcribers — then vetted the printer and binder, catalogued all assets, edited every image and indent, and led regular Welch family meetings to drive the project from concept to execution. One of the most exciting and rewarding design projects I’ve had the privilege to produce.

If you knew Paul before visiting the site, you’d be reminded of his commanding position in the industry. ioLAR by Google
A Google security expert who ran a behind-the-scenes, international regulation module, approached me to design a logo for their flagship project. Most of the details were kept confidential. The module is called “ioLAR” (an anagram). “Iolar” means eagle in Gaelic and it seemed fitting that the surveillance program would keep an “eagle-eye” out and take a “bird’s eye” view when scanning for anomalies. We injected Google branding colors and our ioLar logo was approved for international – and surreptitious – use.

We needed to spotlight his deep understanding of the human condition and his multifaceted use of drastically different characters. I brought in frequent collaborator, Will O’Hare, whose deft photography captured David’s expansiveness and joy.
